Where to go for barbacoa, jumbo lobsters, and a 10-course tasting menu
Señor Frogs, for better or more likely worse, probably plays a prominent role in your perceptions of Cancún: either from hazy, tropical-drinks-addled spring break memories or simply as the restaurant most frequently associated with dining in this vacation town. But, in a way, the Frog's mashed-up menu does reflect the options you can find in the city as a whole. According to writer and longtime Cancún resident Catherine Gordon, in the 600,000-person city — which welcomes more than two million tourists each year — there's "a taco restaurant on almost every street, and there is just as likely to be an Italian eatery and a sushi joint either side of it."
"One of Mexico's most modern and prosperous cities, Cancún has become a fine-dining destination with a collection of luxury restaurants," Gordon says. For diners seeking a more casual experience, she promises "there are still many good cafes and family-run establishments to kick back and relax with the local crowd."
Here now, and in geographic order, Gordon's guide to the essential restaurants of Cancún.
